Loom alternative

Loom alternatives when you need a how-to, not a video message

Loom is built for async video: record your screen and face, share a link. When the video is a how-to people need to follow step by step, a tool built for guides often works better. Here is how the options compare.

Updated
The short answer

Keep Loom for updates, feedback and walkthroughs where your voice and face matter. For repeatable how-tos, Guidie gives you a written step-by-step guide and a narrated video from one recording, free during the beta. Guidde is the larger video-first guide platform; Scribe is text-first.

Which one fits you

Choose Guidie if

Free beta
  • People need to follow steps, not watch a 5-minute video to find one click
  • You want a narrated video without recording your own voice
  • The guide must stay readable when someone searches for step 6

Choose Loom if

  • You want your own voice and face in the video
  • You record meetings, feedback and quick updates
  • You want AI titles, summaries and chapters on talking-head videos (Business + AI)

Loom is a messaging tool, and that's fine

Loom shines when the person matters: a quick update, design feedback, a walkthrough of a pull request. Your face in the corner and your own voice make it feel personal.

How-tos are different. Nobody watches a how-to for the pleasure of it. They want to get to the click they're stuck on. A five-minute video with "um, so then you go to, uh, settings" is hard to scan and goes out of date with the first UI change.

What a guide tool does differently

A guide tool records actions, not just pixels. Each click becomes a step, with the element's name and a screenshot, so the result can be read, searched and partly regenerated.

With Guidie, one recording becomes:

  • a written guide: one instruction per step, verb first, with the button name in bold, and a screenshot taken just before the click with the target outlined;
  • a narrated video: the same steps rendered as an MP4 that plays like a screen recording, with a gliding cursor, outlines, small subtitles and an AI voice-over. You don't have to speak.

A practical split

Many teams keep both: Loom for communication, a guide tool for anything someone will need to repeat. If you record the same Loom more than twice ("how do I submit an expense?"), it probably wants to be a guide.

What Guidie doesn't do

Guidie doesn't record your camera or your voice, and it records web apps in Chrome only. Share links and embeds are in development; today you download the MP4 and work with the guide inside Guidie.

Questions people ask

Can Loom create step-by-step guides?

Loom's pricing page does not list step-by-step document generation. Loom produces videos with transcripts, and AI summaries and chapters on Business + AI.

What's a free Loom alternative for how-to videos?

Guidie is free during its beta and produces a narrated how-to video plus a written guide from one recording. Guidde and Clueso also have free plans with limits.

Do I have to record my voice with Guidie?

No. Guidie writes the narration from your steps and generates an AI voice-over, so you can record silently.
